YA fiction
- Katherine Applegate, The One and Only Ivan. A truish story told from the point of view of a gorilla (Ivan: the Freeway Gorilla) in a mini-Zoo at the Big Top Mall. Poo gets flung, crayons are eaten; gorilla-POV has its advantages...
 - Grace Lin, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. The adventures of a girl whose father's stories and whose mother's sighing led her on a quest to Jade Mountain. A book that flows through a good story very nicely.
 - Lara Amy Schlitz, The Night Fairy. A very good story about a maimed fairy and a hungry squirrel.
 - Lara Amy Schlitz, Splendors & Glooms. A Victorian-era story of puppets & magic, fire & ice. Well told, Dickensian to excess, another book that flows very well, though the story moves relatively slowly, allowing Schlitz to develop some of the elements and characters more deeply.
